Gratuities are required on most cruise lines. Exceptions are Seven Seas, Seabourne, Silversea, and Regent. However,
in all cases you should tip for excellent service or special consideration given by ship personnel.
On most cruise lines, gratuities are automatically added to your Onboard account unless other arrangements are made.
Also, gratuities can be prepaid when booking your cruise.
Most cruise lines recommend about $10 per person per day to be given to the dining room waiter ($4.00 per person, per
day), assistant waiter ($2 per person, per day) and cabin steward ($4.00 per person, per day). If you have butler service,
be prepared to tip that crew member $4 per day. Bar tabs are charged a 15 percent gratuity automatically. When the
maitre d' performs a special service, such as arranging for a birthday cake to be brought to the table, he should be tipped
as well.
The waiters, assistant waiters and cabin stewards -- work very hard. Unless the service has been poor, tip the
recommended amount. If an issue occurs and you believe reduced gratuities are in order, please inform the customer
service representatives on the ship.
For extra service, such as being served in your cabin by a waiter, or having your shoes shined by the cabin steward it is
recommended that you provide additional tips. It is recommended that you carry so single dollar bills when a staff
member has demonstrated service above & beyond the normal call of duty.
